How to Get the Disney Plus App On Apple TV

Disney+ is the biggest topic online right now, and for good reason: the service dropped earlier than expected and people rushed to sign up for Disney+ to the point it actually caused technical problems for the earliest adopters. Those problems were short lived, thankfully, and now it seems like everyone is talking about, or enjoying, Disney+.Disney+ works on tons of different devices, with no real surprises. If you have an Apple TV, you're good to go with Disney+, so long as it's 4th generation or better. If you bought a new Apple TV since 2015, there's a very good chance you have the tech required to install Disney+, but it's not a guarantee: Apple sold the 3rd generation Apple TV through 2016.

If you want to watch 4K content, you're obviously going to need an Apple TV 4K and a 4K TV. What you might not have are the proper HDMI cables. You need HDMI 2.1 cables if you want to watch things in sweet 4K with full dynamic HDR support.

How to Get Disney Plus on Apple TV

Installation on Apple TV is as easy as installing any other Apple TV app.

• Step 1: Visit the Disney+ sign-up page to sign up for an account
• Step 2: On your Apple TV, navigate to the App Store
• Step 3: Find the Disney+ app and click "Get"

Simple. You can skip step 1 and subscribe to Disney+ directly from the app itself, if you want to. No matter what direction you decide to take for Disney+, either standalone or bundled, I recommend signing up for a free 7-day Disney+ trial before you commit to the $6.99 monthly subscription fee. Once you have it installed and you've signed up, you're good to go. There are no special tricks or hoops to jump through, although there is one thing you need to keep in mind if you're signing up for the Disney+ Hulu and ESPN+ bundle.Another really nice feature of Disney+ on Apple TV is especially convenient for iPhone users. If you have the app installed on your iOS device (iPad or iPhone), you don't need to log-in again from the Apple TV app. You don't need to enter in an activation code, either. If you're set up on your phone or iPad, the magic of Apple logs you in through the Apple TV app, too.

Which Apple TV Models Work With Disney Plus

As mentioned above, any Apple TV model 4th generation or better works with the Disney+ app. Here's a breakdown:

• Apple TV HD 32GB
• Apple TV 4K 32GB
• Apple TV 4K 64GB

If your Apple TV has the model number A1427, A1469, or A1378, your Apple TV is too old to run it. If the model number is A1218, you have a first gen Apple TV and what even are you doing?

One quick way to know if you have an Apple TV capable of running the Disney+ app is by its remote. Is the remote that came with your Apple TV metallic aluminum? Then your Apple TV is too old. Use a little rhyme to help you remember: If it's shiny and metal, you're outta luck, feller. You don't have to use that rhyme, but I highly recommend it.

Adding Disney Plus on Apple TV to an Existing Hulu Subscription

If you already have Hulu or ESPN+ (or both) and want to add Disney+, visit the Disney+ sign up website and subscribe to the service with the same email address as you did for Hulu and ESPN+. It's that easy. You'll be credited each month for the cost of the Hulu base subscription and your ESPN+ subscription (one, the other, or both depending on your circumstances). Just make sure you do it on the website and make sure it's the same email address so there's no margin for error. It's simple, really, and a pretty great deal if you want to get a whole bunch of streaming content delivered to your Apple TV in one fell swoop.
